When you say “I know exactly how you feel”, you probably don’t!

“I know just how you feel” is a statement I would bet many of us have heard when we are suffering from loss or depression. It usually comes from friends or family who mean well. I’d also bet that many of us have said it to others – I know I have, and have regretted it soon afterwards.

It is probably right up in the things not to say to someone who is suffering for whatever reason. Although we can hope to empathize with others, we can never know exactly how they feel. You can never know the full back story to the situation they are in.

I found this article from Ted.com this morning on the subject. Hope it will strike a chord with many readers.

Why we should all stop saying “I know exactly how you feel”
